Description
Summary:This article discusses the presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical outcomes for two viral retinitis entities that can result in substantial visual morbidity: acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). ARN is typically caused by the herpes virus family and affects immunocompetent patients whereas CMV is found in immunocompromised individuals. Treatment of viral retinitis includes antiviral therapies, but approaches vary with single or combinations of oral, intravenous, and intravitreal agents. Despite prompt and aggressive treatment, both diseases can cause permanent vision loss given that extensive retinal necrosis may result in retinal breaks and detachments.
