Summary:Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a highly prevalent and traumatic exposure that contributes significantly to the overall burden of psychological distress and mental health disorders among women. IPV can occur across stages of the life course, both collectively among women survivors and through repeated or multimodal abuse for individual women. Because the negative sequelae of IPV on mental health similarly spans generations, helping survivors move toward safety and recovery requires not only effective safety screenings in mental health care settings but also innovative interventions that address unique risk factors for women by life stage and their structural barriers to care.
