Effect of Different Doses of Unripe Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) or Their Combinations with Ginger (Zingiber officinale) on Some Biochemical Parameters, and Hepatic and Pancreatic Histology of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Description
Summary:The effect of different doses of unripe plantain or their combinations with ginger (25 g/kg) on some parameters in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was studied. Following diabetes induction, 45 male albino rats were divided into nine groups of five rats each: groups 1 and 2 (control and diabetic) received rat pellets, group 3 received 200 g/kg unripe plantain-incorporated feed (UPIF), group 4 received 400 g/kg UPIF, group 5 received 600 g/kg UPIF, group 6 received 200 g/kg unripe plantain + 25 g/kg ginger-incorporated feed (GIF), group 7 received 400 g/kg unripe plantain +25 g/kg GIF, group 8 received 600 g/kg unripe plantain +25 g/kg GIF, and group 9 was treated with glibenclamide (2.5 mg/kg). STZ administration induced hyperglycemia, systemic oxidative stress, and inflammation and also altered the liver and pancreas histology of the rats, which was mitigated by unripe plantain (400 g/kg) and ginger (25 g/kg) diet compared with other treatments.
