Summary:PROTECTION from radiation damage by induction of brief periods of hypoxia at the time of irradiation has been demonstrated for a number of intact mammalian tissues 1–4 . There is at present no information available concerning this ‘Oxygen effect’ in the central nervous system. This knowledge is essential if radiotherapy under hypoxic conditions is planned for cerebral tumours. Cerebral damage in the experimental animal following single doses of 2,000–3,000 rads does not normally appear for 6 months or more, so in our attempt to demonstrate this phenomenon we used much higher doses of radiation that give survival times of the order of hours and minutes.
