Summary: | ABSTRACT
This article outlines the causes of stent obstruction and the uses of endovascular brachytherapy with different sources and radioactive stents. Above this temporary stenting, another practical method to minimize trauma to the vessel walls is described. Endovascular brachytherapy with iridium 192 HDR to prevent restenosis in peripheral arteries was first described by the authors in 1990. The results of a 9-year follow-up are encouraging and demonstrate the usefulness of intravascular irradiation. The use of radioactive stents is restricted to the coronary arteries; a potential disadvantage is the delayed epithelization. Temporary stenting is defined as stenting within a limited time period of 24 hours, but there are only a few clinical reports dealing with this method. |
