Description
Summary:The O'Dwyer theory of emission-limited conduction in insulators has been extensively explored. The current-voltage relations based on two types of charge injection were calculated and compared with experimental data for Mylar insulating films. The fit to the data appears reasonable in a general sense; however, although the values of the parameters needed to obtain the fit are physically realistic, they are definitely different from values obtained in other studies. In addition, the experimental data exhibit ``pure'' Schottky characteristics in the region of high-field strength and this cannot be explained on the basis of the O'Dwyer theory. For both processes of Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim emission the theory is limited to a current density above some minimum value, but for different reasons. It is very interesting that in every one of our calculations the space charge according to the O'Dwyer theory was found to persist throughout the entire thickness of the sample.
