Magnetic Interactions in Gadolinium Orthoferrite
GdFeO3 has been shown by other workers to behave as an antiferromagnet at temperatures below 650°K, the ordering pattern is GxFz. We have measured the canted Fe moment at low temperatures and we have observed its influence on the paramagnetic susceptibility of the Gd3+ ions. At 1.47°K the Gd3+ ions...

Summary: | GdFeO3 has been shown by other workers to behave as an antiferromagnet at temperatures below 650°K, the ordering pattern is GxFz. We have measured the canted Fe moment at low temperatures and we have observed its influence on the paramagnetic susceptibility of the Gd3+ ions. At 1.47°K the Gd3+ ions order antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic a axis and at low temperatures and high magnetic fields ``spin flop'' is observed. The specific heat has been measured between 0.5° and 12°K but its form is not easily explained. |
