Summary:YbAl3 is a mixed valent system for which temperature independent and temperature dependent models of the Yb 3+ fraction have been proposed. An enlarged spin-disorder contribution to thermopower in associated with a temperature dependent model. The thermopower of GdIn3, an alloy which is isostructural to YbAl3 and which is expected to have large spin-disorder effects associated with the Gd, has been measured and found to have small spin-disorder effects. Interpolating these findings to YbAl3 indicates that the spin-disorder contribution is about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that required by the proposed temperature dependence for the Yb 3+ fraction.
