Laser-induced fluorescence measurement of the internal and fine structure states distributions of OD( X  2Π, v , J , N ) from D+NO2

The relative populations of rotational states in v=0, 1, 2, of OD produced in the crossed molecular beam reaction D+NO2 and in v=0 of OH from H+NO2 were measured by laser-induced fluorescence. High degrees of rotational and vibrational excitation are observed. These distributions are analyzed using...

Description
Summary:The relative populations of rotational states in v=0, 1, 2, of OD produced in the crossed molecular beam reaction D+NO2 and in v=0 of OH from H+NO2 were measured by laser-induced fluorescence. High degrees of rotational and vibrational excitation are observed. These distributions are analyzed using an information theoretic approach which incorporates constraints on the rotational degeneracy of the reaction products. The probability of production of fine structure states within v=0 of the OD product is also reported. The reaction produces a nearly statistical spin state distribution. However, one of the members of each λ doublet is found to be preferentially populated. The implications of the experimental observations and the information theoretic analysis are discussed.
