Description
Summary:The technique using viscosimetry or flow rate reduction has been used by several investigators to determine the extension from the surface of an adsorbed flexible macromolecule. In this paper, we present a simple interpretation of these measurements. The theory is based on the solution of a modified Navier–Stokes equation which takes into account hydrodynamic interactions for a segment concentration which decreases exponentially with distance from the surface. From the ’’hydrodynamic’’ thickness as a function of molecular weight of polystyrene chains adsorbed onto Pyrex glass at the ϑ temperature, the mean layer thickness as well as the volume fraction in the loop layer is determined.
