ESR spectra of matrix isolated Li7 clusters

ESR spectra assigned to 6Li7 and 7Li7 have been produced by co-depositing atomic lithium with excess argon in a liquid helium cooled cryostat. The spectra are characterized by an isotropic g value, g0=2.00045(6) for 7Li7, and hf coupling constants a1=36.39(5) G for two equivalent 7Li nuclei plus a2=...

Description
Summary:ESR spectra assigned to 6Li7 and 7Li7 have been produced by co-depositing atomic lithium with excess argon in a liquid helium cooled cryostat. The spectra are characterized by an isotropic g value, g0=2.00045(6) for 7Li7, and hf coupling constants a1=36.39(5) G for two equivalent 7Li nuclei plus a2=2.19(2) G for (most likely) five equivalent 7Li nuclei. Both g0 and a2 show a small temperature dependence in the range 4.1–30 K, but the mechanism for this effect remains open. As in the case of Na7 and K7, the ESR spectra may be interpreted as arising from a pentagonal bipyramidal molecule with ground state symmetry 2A″2. The average p character for Li7 is much greater than in the corresponding sodium and potassium septemers and, if a2
