Description
Summary:Small polaron formation in LiNbO3 is shown to cause thermally activated electron capture on deep impurities. The activation energy for carrier trapping is calculated by using a simple model, which takes into account ionic relaxation for both the impurity and the lattice. The calculation predicts an activation energy for thermal decay of an excess Fe2+ population which agrees with experiment.
