Description
Summary:An attempt is made to define the principal lines of research on cadres that have been developed in France. Through the use of examples, 4 lines of research are distinguished: 1. what cadres think, 2. the careers of cadres, 3. what cadres do, and 4. the relationship among cadres, trade unionism, and politics. Studies of representativeness or of the strategies of acquiring and changing the class status of a group in search of its symbolic unity reveal nothing about the way cadre knowledge is managed, about the hierarchic arrangement of jobs, or about the origins of a cadre-formation system that has no counterpart outside France. By focusing attention on supply rather than demand, it becomes possible to understand historically the relations between firms and institutions educating future cadres. The link between socialization and organization may be a research perspective that allows one to escape the substantive approach and grasp the necessary historical dimension of cadres.
