Description
Summary:Commonwealth countries are well-known global hotspots for child marriage. Seven members - Bangladesh, India, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, South Sudan and Uganda - belong to the global list of 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage. Together, these countries account for a majority of the child bride population worldwide. According to estimates provided by the United Nations Human Rights Council, over 140 million girls will be married before their eighteenth birthday over the next decade and almost 50% of these are in India and Bangladesh. Therefore, ending child marriage within South Asian countries in the Commonwealth is critical to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 5.3 (to eliminate child marriage under 18 by 2030) at the global level.
