Summary:Three interpretations of 'community entomology' are applied here. Firstly the human communitv reauires sustainable management of biodiversitv of which the insects form the major component. Secondly, as this will require measurement and comparison of insect communities, a validated, pragmatic approach to their characterisation is briefly outlined. Thirdly, the entomological community must engender collaboration to realise the potential of this knowledge for improving stewardship of our biotic environment.
