Summary:Along with the worldwide ageing process, quality of life for those older people who live in care facilities has received increasing attention. Although gardens have been shown to contribute to the quality of life in various ways, and are commonly provided, they can hardly help much if not well used. Therefore, this study was carried out to identify factors in garden establishment and operation that influence garden usage in elderly care facilities. Face-to-face interviews with management, elderly residents and staff, together with continuous unobtrusive observations, were conducted in two elderly care facilities in Hong Kong. Findings suggest that scale of the facility and garden, location of the garden, attitudes towards the garden among residents, as well as support from staff are influential in garden usage in elderly care facilities. Suggestions to optimise garden usage are provided accordingly.
