Description
Summary:In developing countries situated in tropical climates, the majority of the heat transmitted to the internal environment is received by the roof. In these countries it is common to construct roofs from thin sheet materials. This paper examines, theoretically and practically, the concept of providing a false ceiling panel beneath the single roof sheet to form a hollow, ventilated roof structure to reduce the ingress of solar heat gain. It concludes that a hollow roof structure does appear to have certain thermal advantages over a plain sheet roofing structure, bringing about a reduction in thermal flux of between 25% and 30%.
