Description
Summary:This paper reports on the state of the Canada-US trade relationship, updating a 2005 survey. Despite stalled multilateral trade negotiations & the impact of tightened border security, trade relations remain strong. Citizens, firms, & government officials in both countries continue to maintain fruitful cultural, political, & especially economic exchanges. In light of the current stability, the author reflects on the past & considers possible future areas of friction, focusing on four themes: (1) the softwood lumber dispute, which was resolved in Sept 2006 but may rise again; (2) recent trade conflicts, which have been settled favorably for Canada; (3) the failure of multilateral trade negotiations relating to agricultural products; & (4) the trade-security nexus as it affects the Canada-US trade relationship. The overview makes it clear that commercial interchanges between the two countries reflect dynamic processes that require continuous trust-building & preparation for possible future pitfalls. Tables.
