Summary:The practice of salsa induces conditions of exchange between social actors that are almost exclusively based on the gaze. Beyond the explanation of the conditions of the collection of materials, this article offers a more general methodological reflection on the ethnography of fields in which speech as an instrument of interaction is limited. It allows us to formulate some conclusions on the heuristic value of body language and its conditions of possibility, and on the benefits of considering the "discomforts" of the field as real tools of knowledge.
