Heart rate monitors have been used by adult exercisers for many years to monitor and assess the intensity of exercise sessions. However, heart rate monitors have become increasingly more common within physical education programs to: (1) supplement the physical education fitness curriculum; (2) motivate students to achieve higher intensity levels; and (3) assess student progress in reaching higher intensity levels. It has also been shown that heart rate monitors are an effective method for motivating students to be more physically active during physical education classes. In this article, the authors discuss the advantages and the disadvantage of using heart rate monitors in the physical education curriculum.
