Description
Summary:Awareness of the ontogenetic aspects of sleep is a pre-requisite to the proper laboratory assessment of sleep-wake disorders of childhood because normative data pertaining to respiration and sleep change continuously from infancy through adolescence. Obstructed breathing may manifest itself either in the form of obstructive sleep apnea or the upper airway resistance syndrome. There is no consensus about the scoring of hypopneas in childhood. Daytime sleepiness is evaluated using a combination of sleep history, nocturnal polysomnography, and the multiple sleep latency test. Serial batteries of tests may be needed to make a definitive diagnosis of narcolepsy in a child. The combination of wrist actigraphy and sleep logs is useful in the evaluation of circadian rhythm disorders. This paper summarizes practical information relevant to EEG and sleep technologists.
