Description
Summary:Sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate the influence of the radius of central soil column, r 0 , on the dynamic response of the foundation in the POINT module of the SASSI program. To that goal, three different examples of foundation, which are the foundation installed on the surface and two embedded foundations with different depths, are considered for the analysis. Each example is constructed by discretized meshes with either uniform or varying mesh sizes. The results for different values of are compared to the result obtained by the recommended size in SASSI user's manual. For smaller value of r 0 , it is observed that the difference in the amplitude of the transfer function from the result obtained by the recommended size in SASSI user's manual is relatively larger than both the uniform mesh size and various mesh sizes when the average mesh size is the same. Furthermore, the variation in the transfer function for the embedded foundation is less sensitive to the r 0 parameter than the foundation placed on the surface. Based on the numerical results, it can be concluded that 0.9 times the largest size of finite elements mesh (i.e., 0.9·h max ) is appropriate for the parameter used in the POINT module of the SASSI program, if the mesh is smaller than largest allowable size of the finite element by satisfying the wave passage condition.
