Summary: | Recently, several groups have intensively reported a nematic liquid crystal phase with a switchable spontaneous polarization. Surprisingly, this phase exhibit extremely large dielectric permittivity as large as 10,000 in addition to their ferroelectric-like response. Needless to say, the mechanism in the emergence of the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal phase is important from the fundamental point of view. However, it is also important to explore their properties and potential functions on the basis of its polar behavior. In this paper, we review some examples of optical properties of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals. |
