Summary:Photography plays a crucial role in couple relationships, particularly during relationship initiation. This study explores "firsties," that is, pictures depicting relationship initiation. Based on qualitative interviews and visual elicitation with 21 couples in Switzerland, four image types in the firsties category were identified, "first trips," "first picture/early pictures of the couple," "the 'paparazzi'-picture," and "the 'hidden' couple," and their characteristics were carved out. The findings highlight the value of firsties as significant visual artifacts serving as indicators and proof of commitment. Firsties remain important and gain significance as the relationship progresses. This research enhances understanding of relationship initiation as a pivotal moment in couples' relationship trajectories and the integral role of photography therein.
