Summary: | Érnile Chartier (1868—1951), who wrote under the pseudonym Alain, was a prolific philosopher and essayist. and a noted pacifist. His book System or the Fine Arts. first published in 1920 (the translation below is from a 1926 new edition published by Gallimard), lies somewhat outside the mainstream of his philosophy, •which tended to champion individual and responsibility in the face of political authority. It is relevant here. however. because one of his principal goals in the book is to differentiate between the artist the artisan. and the industrial fabricator. He takes up this question in his opening pages, and returns to it in the sections translated here. As he proceeds with his inquiry, he weaves in two recurring themes: an attack on the Romantic notion of the primacy of the creative impulse, and some reflections on the relationship between art and beauty. |
