Influence of various concentration of lead on consolidation parameters of bentonite

Influence of concentrations of lead (Pb 2+ ) on consolidation behaviour of bentonite was investigated. Various parameters such as coefficient of consolidation (c v ), coefficient of volume change (m v ), time for 90% of consolidation (t90) and compression index (C c ) and Swelling potential and swel...

Description
Summary:Influence of concentrations of lead (Pb 2+ ) on consolidation behaviour of bentonite was investigated. Various parameters such as coefficient of consolidation (c v ), coefficient of volume change (m v ), time for 90% of consolidation (t90) and compression index (C c ) and Swelling potential and swelling pressure in the presence of the various lead concentration ranging from 250 to 1000 mg/L. The results manifested that with the increase in lead concentration, the swelling pressure, swelling potential and c v  increased; however, C c , m v  and t 90  of the bentonite decreased. A decrease in diffuse double layer (DDL) thickness as the Pb 2+  gets adsorbed by bentonite is responsible for the change in these parameters. The results show that the impact of Pb 2+  on bentonite was more dominant at higher concentration. Results also revealed that with the rise in vertical consolidation pressure, t90 increased, whereas c v  decreased. However, m v  increased initially and then decreased after reaching a peak value.
