Description
Summary:This article offers insight into the dynamics of a "food system event," as well as possible concrete measures to make it a catalyst for sustainability. The case study concerns one of the most important international food events in Italy, the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto. A food event is an ecosystem whose behaviors, habits, creativity, and opportunity reflect the organization of the system and its message. A "sustainable food event" should also be a "food event designed in a sustainable way." The article focuses on the changes that need to occur in the design and management of food events as systems in order to balance natural resource use and reduced environmental impact with the needs of production, economic viability, and social well-being. Through the application of systemic design, the article shows how it is possible to design an event whose life cycle transcends its limited duration in time in order to translate its sustainable action into simple, daily acts.
