Description
Summary:Lifespan communication researchers investigate the changes in relevant communication perceptions, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships across the entirety of our lives. Borrowing from the pioneering work of behavioral researchers in our sister disciplines of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and human development, communication researchers utilizing the lifespan perspective to guide their investigations have produced a significant amount of literature throughout the past three decades. This article reviews several significant areas of lifespan communication research related to cognition/social cognition, language development, communication competence, relationship change across the lifespan, and the longitudinal design best suited to capture age-related, intraindividual change. The article concludes with a discussion of how communication scholars can embrace this perspective and the type of knowledge that can be gained once the perspective guides research inquiries.
