Summary: | Since it was first introduced, Brazilian football has undergone a process of cultural incorporation and has been a primordial element in the country's recent history, functioning as a powerful mechanism for social integration and for the consolidation of a national identity. However, by the end of the 20C a 'crisis' began to appear. This essay evaluates its dimensions explaining the crisis in the context of the changes experienced by Brazilian society in the last decades and the cultural transformations stemming from globalisation - what might be termed postmodernity.
