Summary: | Two coniferous dwarf shoots from the Raritan Formation (Late Cretaceous) of Parlin, New Jersey, represent a new species of the extinct pinacean genus Prepinus. Prepinus parlinensis, sp. nov., has a much reduced axis bearing a terminal cluster of 25 or more helically disposed needle leaves. Numerous imbricate cataphylls occur below the cluster of needles and entirely surround the dwarf shoot axis. The fossils are well preserved and are compared with the dwarf shoots and needles of some extant members of the Pinaceae. Of the five previously described species of Prepinus, P. delawarensis Penny is most similar to the new species. |
