The influence of surface roughness and surface temperature on arc spot movement in vacuum

Description
Summary:The movement of arc cathode spots has been measured with virgin and with eroded Mo surfaces at various temperatures. The erosion process and the temperature influence the random movement only insignificantly. Since with virgin surfaces the cathode craters overlap it is concluded that the elementary displacement step corresponds to a crater radius in all cases, provided the surfaces are sufficiently clean. This result has consequences for cathode heating models. 14 ref.--AA
