Description
Summary:Discussion of the neoclassical theory of the bootstrap effect, and rederivation of the moment equations of Bickerton et al. (1971) describing the steady-state density and current profiles. It is concluded that available neutral injection techniques are sufficient to drive a significant bootstrap current in hot Tokamak plasmas. The Kruskal-Shafranov limit can be reached solely by the bootstrap current, but the injected particle density is not sufficient to balance diffusion losses. By varying the injection parameters, the plasma equilibrium and its mass, momentum, and energy balance can be controlled drastically.
