Summary: | Pigs are the most appropriate species in cardiovascular research, one of which is myocardial infarction. This study aimed to obtain data on the number of leukocytes in domestic pigs (
Sus scrofa domestica
) before and after heart infarct surgery. A total of six four-month-old pigs at the Teaching Animal Hospital, IPB University, had their blood samples taken through the jugular vein, then put into a vacuum tube containing an anticoagulant (K
3
EDTA) for further testing using a hematology analyzer. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study from 6 samples analyzed that the average number of leukocytes before and after heart infarct surgery were 16.33 ± 3.62 x 10

/μL and 16.97 ± 4.59 x 10
3
/μL. The increase in leukocytes in the blood cannot be used as an independent predictor to diagnose cardiac infarction. This is because many events can trigger an increase in the number of leukocytes in the blood, such as inflammation during heart infarct surgery. |
