Summary: | Concrete has wide application in construction engineering but it has durability issues in extreme weather conditions. In this article, carbon based nano material, graphite platelets is introduced into cementitious matrix to make it more resilient in extreme weather condition. Four different percentages of graphite nano/micro platelets by mass of cement, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, 1.0% were incorporated in conventional concrete and its effect on salt freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to control sample were studied. Test results reveals that concrete were still durable after 7, 14, and 28 freeze-thaw exposures. Salt freeze-thaw response was evaluated in terms of surface scaling and internal structure damage which was significantly improved with the addition of nano graphitic plates. Scanning electron micrographs have verified the crack branching effects of induced platelets. The pore structure was refined as revealed in nitrogen absorption isotherms with the nano-modifications contributing in added resilience to subjected frost damages. |
