Dietary phenolics affects performance of the gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) and its parasitoid Cotesia melanoscela (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Description
Summary:We examined the effects of dietary phenolic glycosides and tannic acid on performance of the gypsy moth. Lymantria dispar (L.), and its suitability as a host for the parasitoid Cotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg). Gypsy moth growth was reduced on diets containing allelochemicals, and the magnitude of reduction was greater on diets supplemented with phenolic glycosides than on diets supplemented with tannic acid. Reductions in gypsy moth performance translated into prolonged development, reduced cocoon weight, and higher incidences of mortality for C. melanoscela. Overall, phenolic glycosides reduced C. melanoscela performance slightly more than did tannic acid. These results show that interactions of C. melanoscela with its host are influenced by the diet of the host, demonstrating that plant allelochemicals can have profound effects not only on plant-herbivore interactions but on herbivore-natural enemy interactions as well
