Summary: | The Wassermann reaction in rabbit syphilis is an index of tissues-pirochete interaction and is not a criterion of the presence or absence of the spirochete. The Wassermann reaction is consistently positive in about 99% of the cases of active rabbit syphilis following intratesticular inoculation. The appearance of the positive Wassermann reaction in rabbits affected with syphilis may be completely suppressed by the institution of adequate treatment in the clinically active but prepositive Wassermann stage. |
