Description
Summary:Mecillinam-resistant spherical mutants of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli were tested for virulence. Measurement of LD5O in mice revealed a slight increase in virulence of the mutant strains. The phagocytosis and killing of the mutant strains by human PMN leucocytes were impaired. We conclude that mecillinam-resistant mutants, despite their lower growth-rate, may give problems in patients during mecillinam therapy, especially when the defence mechanisms of the body are impaired.
