A new genus and new species of decapod crustacean (Decapoda: Brachyura: Panopeidae) from the early Priabonian (Late Eocene) of the central Pyrenees of Huesca (Aragón, Spain), with remarks on its habitat and ecology

Eoacantholobulus oscensis n. gen, n. sp. is proposed to accommodate the decapods recovered in the early Priabonian outcrops of the central Pyrenees of Aragón (Spain). The strong similarities with the extant genera Acantholobulus Felder & Martin, 2003 and Rhithropanopeus Rathbun, 1898 that the ne...

Description
Summary:Eoacantholobulus oscensis n. gen, n. sp. is proposed to accommodate the decapods recovered in the early Priabonian outcrops of the central Pyrenees of Aragón (Spain). The strong similarities with the extant genera Acantholobulus Felder & Martin, 2003 and Rhithropanopeus Rathbun, 1898 that the new taxon presents allow us, after detailed comparisons, to propose the placement of the new genus and new species in Panopeidae Ortmann, 1893, in particular in Panopeinae Ortmann, 1893, being the first record of this family in the Eocene of the Iberian Peninsula. The interpretation of the paleoenvironment inhabited by the new species, indicates that was very similar to the habitats where the extant panopeines inhabit. The different paleoenvironments inhabited by panopeines in the Tethyan and Atlantic waters of Europe, and in the Pacific and Atlantic waters of America during the Eocene times are discussed.
