Description
Summary:The longitudinal resistance of Characeae cells depends on whether the cells are immersed in water or surrounded by air. Immersion of the cells causes changes of up to 50 per cent in the longitudinal resistance. These changes are reproducible, reversible, and local. They occur immediately on immersion and not as a result of the outflow of the current into the solution surrounding the cell. These results suggest that inside the cell, next to the plasmalemma, there is a layer with a high specific conductivity (perhaps an electronic conductivity) which is responsible for the effect under investigation.
