Electronographic Measurements of the Density Structure of NGC 6543 using the O+ and CL++ Ions
Measurements have been made with the electronographic image tube spectrograph on the Isaac Newton Telescope of the [O II] doublet λ 3726, 3729 Å and the [Cl III] doublet λ 5537, 5517 Å at 80 and 140 positions respectively in the planetary nebula NGC 6543. Summary: | Measurements have been made with the electronographic image tube spectrograph on the Isaac Newton Telescope of the [O II] doublet λ 3726, 3729 Å and the [Cl III] doublet λ 5537, 5517 Å at 80 and 140 positions respectively in the planetary nebula NGC 6543. A temperature is found from the ratio of the Balmer Jump to the sum of H15, H16 and H17. The electron density as indicated by the O+ ions is found to vary from 1500 to 5000 cm–3 and that indicated by the Cl++ ions to vary from 3000 to 6500 cm–3. No correlation between the two density structures was found indicating that the real local density fluctuations found are in no way continuous through variations in excitation conditions. |
