Description
Summary:This is a personal reflection on selected experiences in local public health leadership. We sought to change the emphasis of our agency from that of focusing on personal preventive services to broader community-based public health. I describe aspects of reorganizing our structure and establishing relationships with our community. I review our experiences in establishing a countywide clean indoor air act, successfully passing a $29.7 million bond referendum, and starting an innovative small grants program. Essential lessons learned include the importance of fostering a constituency internal to the agency and of developing ways to recognize the contribution of local elected officials.
