Summary: | Alexander Fleck, whose memory we are met to honour, was a Lowland Scot through and through. A true son of his native Glasgow, he was what I would describe as a practical idealist, shrewd, imaginative, hardheaded, and tenacious in adversity. These qualities alone would have earned him respect, as indeed they did, but they would not have won for him the deep affection in which he was held by all who knew him. That affection rested on his unselfishness and on his passion for truth and fair dealing, tempered as it was by a warmth and friendliness and spiced with the pawky humour of the Scot; in him were embodied the finest characteristics of his race. |
