Summary: | The characteristics of plasmons in nonuniform plasma are studied. It is found that plasmons can be supported by the interface between two plasma having different plasma frequencies, while their frequencies depend on the ratio of the lower plasma frequency to the higher plasma frequency. Interestingly, when the ratio is about 1, the frequencies of plasmons are equal to these plasma frequencies approximately. Some experimental evidences are shown to prove the existence of the plasmon polarizations in the nonuniform plasma, and a new plasma diagnostic method based on this conclusion is proposed, and is used to obtain the plasma density distribution of a cylindrical plasma with Bessel function electron density distribution as well as Epstein electron density distribution. The inverted results are in good agreement with the given distribution. These studies pave the way for a possible tool of plasma diagnostic, as well as the microwave applications based on plasma. |
