Summary: | This article is written by one of the runners up for the Stanley Segal Memorial Award. It is based on qualitative data from a school and community project (1998–9) aimed at developing communication wareness and skills in Leicester students, parents and teachers, for improved school performance. Courses are taught over 8–10 weeks using methods of teaching communication. Results have confirmed the importance of this input to student education. The present aim is to train parents to run groups in after‐school clubs under the supervision of teachers in schools. The project was a collaboration between the Special Needs Teaching Service, Schools and Community, Leicester University, AFASIC (The Association for Speech Impaired Children) and Human Communications International. The perspective presented is the students', reflecting their views of the system in which they find themselves (names have been changed). |
