Enlightenment and individuation: syncretism, synchronicity and beyond

This paper opens with a personal introduction to the topic of syncretism within the context of a comparison of enlightenment associated with Eastern religious traditions and individuation as experienced through Jungian analysis. A brief exploration of the recent scholarly revival of interest in syncretism follows. Some close parallels with Jungian theory are highlighted, especially in the work of Timothy Light. Applications to the syncretic trends in Tang culture along the Silk Road(s) suggest deeper patterns of interconnectedness lie at the heart of these trends. A complex systems view highlights similarities between syncretic connections and non‐local aspects of synchronistic field events. The final section attempts to extend this approach to innovation in general terms through the recently articulated concept of the ‘adjacent possible’ from the writing of Stuart Kauffman. From this, the notion of a collective pre‐conscious dimension to the psyche is extrapolated. The unifying thread of acausal emergent forms provides a potential synthetic network for these phenomena. Cet article commence par une présentation personnelle sur le sujet du syncrétisme dans le contexte d’une comparaison entre l’illumination ‐ associée aux traditions religieuses de l’Orient – et l’individuation ‐ telle qu’on en fait l’expérience par l’analyse Jungienne. Vient ensuite une courte exploration de l’intérêt renouvelé pour l’étude du syncrétisme. Des parallèles étroits avec la théorie jungienne sont soulignés, particulièrement dans le travail de Timothy Light. Les applications aux courants syncrétiques dans la culture Tang, le long de la Route de la Soie (ou des Routes de la Soie), suggèrent que des schémas plus profonds d’interconnectivité se trouvent au cœur de ces courants. La perspective des systèmes complexes permet de saisir des similarités entre les connections syncrétiques et les aspects non‐localisés d’événements dans le champ synchronistique. La dernière partie de l’article cherche à étendre cette approche de l’innovation en termes généraux grâce au concept du ‘possible adjacent’ formulé récemment dans les travaux de Stuart Kauffman. A partir de cela, la notion d’une dimension préconsciente de la psyché est avancée. Le lien unificateur de formes émergentes acausales fournit potentiellement un réseau synthétique pour ces phénomènes.
