Summary:ON THE COVER: A colonial chrysophyte Synura hibernica , composed by several elongated cells joined together by their posterior ends. Note the layer or imbricate silica scales covering the entire surface of the cells. This species has a striking distribution pattern, being quite common in North America but much less so in Europe where it occurs only in western Ireland.
