Summary: | A bench type wear test was used to study the wear characteristics of several basic filled TFE materials in air and in nitrogen atmospheres containing various amounts of moisture. Test results show that the atmospheric environment and the amount of moisture both influence the wear characteristics of filled TFE materials. In particular, environmental conditions are shown to have a direct effect on the mode of wear experienced; that is, whether or not a lubricating film is created on the rubbing surface. This work emphasizes the need for care in selecting the proper filled TFE composition for given environmental conditions. |
