Summary: | Magnesium and magnesium alloys such as magnesium-lithium are of great interest for the application as biodegradable implants. To control the degradation, a tailoring of the corrosion rate is needed. In this study, the effect of a short (5–20 s) dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment in ambient air on the corrosion rate of magnetron sputtered Mg and MgLi thin films is presented. The treatment with atmospheric plasma of as sputtered samples leads to a decrease of the corrosion rate of 45%−50% in Hanks’ balanced salt solution. The higher corrosion resistance is influenced by a change in surface structure and a formation of an MgCO3 containing film. |
