Summary: | About one in five people can be categorized as “noise-sensitive.” An individual’s degree of noise-sensitivity appears to be a personal characteristic, not an acquired attitude. Because environmental noise assessments within the United States are based on average response to noise, the existence of noise-sensitive people can be a challenge for land-use planning around airports and other noise-generating facilities. Although there has been some research on noise sensitivity within the United States, the bulk of research has been conducted in Europe and Japan. The purpose of the tutorial is to review key findings from some of the most recent research on this subject. |
