Summary: | The use of time reverse signal processing (TRSP) to compensate for distortion in a communications channel is well established in recent literature. Our recent work quantifies the effectiveness of TRSP techniques vis-à-vis traditional adaptive equalization techniques. These quantitative measurements are developed using simulations and laboratory experiments. A rigorous mathematical development of the communications problem is first necessary to establish a consistent model of the communications channel, and various approaches for implementing TRSP and adaptive equalization as well. These techniques are then simulated and performance measures developed for a large set of conditions spanning an increasing number of multipaths and increasing SNR. Acoustic laboratory experiments are also conducted in a highly reverberant environment to confirm both our techniques and results. In this paper we report on these measures of effectiveness comparing TRSP vis-a-vis traditional adaptive equalization techniques for compensating for multipath in a communications channel.
